Controversial Abdur Razzak makes winning Bangladesh return

Abdur Razzak made a successful return to the Bangladesh side when he helped the Tigers win the first one-day international against West Indies by 52 runs on Sunday.

Razzak, who was banned from bowling in international cricket in December 2008 due to a suspect action before having his suspension lifted in March, open the bowling and took four wickets for 39 runs as Bangladesh protected a target of 247 at international cricket's newest venue of Windsor Park.

"I was not surprised when the captain gave me the new ball, especially the way the pitches have been playing in the Caribbean during this series," said Razzak.

"When I played in the Caribbean in the 2007 World Cup, I also used the new ball, so it's normal.

"But this was important for me. I was out of the team for last eight months, and now I am back in the side, I am looking to do well."

The triumph gives Bangladesh a 1-0 lead in the three-match series with the second ODI planned for the same venue on Tuesday, and the final ODI on Friday at Warner Park in St. Kitts.

Mohammad Ashraful hit the high score on the board of 57 and skipper Shakib Al Hasan stroked 54 to lead the Bangladesh batting, despite Kemar Roach intriguing a career-best five wickets for 44 runs.

But Razzak, who don’t play in his team's successful Test series, then gave Bangladesh a boost, when he intent West Indies opener Dale Richards lbw for one in the second over.

Bangladesh sustained to build the pressure, particularly with their spin bowlers operating from very early, and West Indies flabby to 42 for four in the 12th over.

Devon Smith and Dave Bernard Jr takes 78 for the fifth wicket to stabilize West Indies.

But Shakib, bowling his left-arm spin, made the breakthrough in the 29th over, when he fascinated Smith lbw for the top score of 65.

Bangladesh found little or no resistance from the remaining West Indies batsmen, although Sammy got 28 before Razzak trapped him lbw in the 42nd over.

"We lost the game with our batting," said West Indies captain Floyd Reifer.

"We are not getting sufficient partnerships at the top of the innings. We are quite happy with the balance of the team."

Earlier, Ashraful held the Tigers' top-order together, and when he was sacked, Shakib kept his nerve to take advantage of the powerplay in the closing overs to help Bangladesh post their highest total against West Indies.

Skipper Shakib said: "We were always confident with the final total we posted because we knew the pitch was playing a little slowly and we had four spinners in our side.

"I have been surprised by the environment of the pitches in the Caribbean. I thought they would have had more bounce and pace. But it suited our spinners, Razzak came back into the side, bowled well, and did a good job for us."

Matthew Hayden to setup academy in Chennai

Former Aussie opener Matthew Hayden has planned to open a youth academy in Chennai and he wants to take the help of Former Indian Skipper Rahul Dravid and his Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming in the venture.

Hayden said education would be given equal importance to cricket in the academy. "We should be able to understand that the kids who will be training in the academy may not go on to become cricketers in life. Education is something they can always fall back on," he said.

Hayden said he had spoken to Rahul Dravid about the academy when they were playing in the IPL in South Africa past this year. "Rahul Dravid has those values in him which I can also identify with and I would definitely love to have him with me."

Fleming, for his part, has previously visited Chennai to scour for vicinity talent.

Hayden said he had decided to give back to the city where he had practiced playing on turning tracks 10 years ago on Australia's 2000-01 tour to India. "About a decade back, when I came here to practise on turning tracks, I told myself standing in an blank Chepauk stadium that I would score a century for Australia one day," Hayden told the Times of India. "I did that, and now this is a way of giving something back to the city from where I have got so much."

That series, often called with the greatest of all time, was the start of Hayden's rise to amongst the all-time greats in international cricket.

His skipper then was Steve Waugh - who Hayden has always looked up to. Waugh has been concerned with charity projects in India, and most notably with Udayan in Kolkata.

"I have always been inspired by the way Steve worked for Udayan in Kolkata. Similarly, I am also looking forward to do something for Chennai," he said.

Yuvraj Singh jumps to No.2 after WI ODI series

It was an Indian one-two in the ICC ODI Rankings as dashing Yuvraj Singh zoomed to a career best second place, in the table peaked by his captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Despite winning the four match series against the WI, there was, however, no such good news for India as Dhoni's men missed a chance to get back the second spot in the ICC ODI Championship and remained third.

India wanted to win all their matches against the West Indies but they went down in the second tie at Sabina Park even though it could not refute them a 2-1 series win in the Caribbeans.

Yuvraj Singh made scores of 131, 35 & 2 in the three matches against the West Indies whereas the 4th ODI in St Lucia was washed out yesterday. His series involvement helped him jump two places and he now sits after Dhoni who has consolidated his number one position.

West Indies looking to repeat success against India

West Indies opening batsman Runako Morton said the hosts will look to repeat their series-levelling show of Sabina Park when they take on India in the 3rd ODI at the Beausejour Stadium on Friday.

Alert that whoever wins the 3rd ODI would be spared the humiliation of a series defeat, Morton said he individually would settle for nothing less than a win.

"The series is level 1-1. As always I will be looking to win," Morton said.

For that, he said, his teammates would hope to display the similar passion that helped them crush the visitors by 8 wickets in the 2nd ODI last week.

"We will be looking to put in another good team effort as we showed in Jamaica. Players are putting their hands up and putting in well performances and we are confident," said the right-hander.

Morton himself has been in good form since returning to the side for the four-match ODI series against India.
